Prop Firm Evaluations and Funded Accounts: A Ghanaian Trader's Guide
A prop firm evaluation is a test where you trade the firm's capital under rules, and passing may lead to a funded account.

What a Prop Firm Evaluation Actually Is
A prop firm evaluation, often called a challenge, is a structured test. You trade a simulated account using the firm's rules, and if you meet their targets without breaking their limits, you may be offered a funded account. The firm is not your broker. It is a separate company that sets the rules and decides who gets funded.
The evaluation usually has a profit target, a maximum loss limit, and a time frame. Some firms allow news trading, some do not. Some restrict how much you can risk per trade. These rules are not standard across firms, so always read the specific evaluation page before you pay anything.
In Ghana, traders often hear about prop firms through online communities. The appeal is clear: you trade larger capital than you could fund yourself. But the evaluation is not a shortcut. Most people who start an evaluation do not pass, which is why the rules matter more than the marketing.

A figure is only worth printing with a source and a date behind it; anything we could not trace stayed out of the table.
How Funded Accounts Work After You Pass
If you pass the evaluation, the firm may give you a funded account. This is still the firm's money, not yours. You trade under a contract that explains how profits are split, how withdrawals work, and what happens if you breach a rule. The split and the withdrawal schedule are set by the firm, so check their funding page for exact terms.
A funded account is not a guarantee of income. It is an opportunity to trade with more capital, but you still carry the risk of losing the account if you break the drawdown rules. Many firms have a daily loss limit and an overall loss limit. Breaching either can end the account.
Withdrawals are usually paid through the firm's chosen methods. For Ghanaian traders, that often means mobile money or bank transfer, but the firm decides. MTN Mobile Money is the main rail locally, and you can check your own MTN MoMo app for any transaction limits on your side. The firm's funding page will state their payout methods.
| Rail | What it is | Who sets the limit and the fee |
|---|---|---|
| MTN MoMo | Mobile wallet | The wallet provider and the broker |
| Telecel Cash | Mobile wallet | The wallet provider and the broker |
| AirtelTigo Money | Mobile wallet | The wallet provider and the broker |
| Bank transfer | Bank transfer | Your bank and the broker |
| Card | Card payment | Your card issuer and the broker |
Limits and fees are set by the provider and the broker and change without notice, so they are not printed here. Confirm both in the provider's app and on the broker's funding page, and withdraw to the same account you paid from.
What to Check Before You Pay for an Evaluation
First, check the firm's rules on their own website. Look for the profit target, the maximum daily loss, the maximum overall loss, and the minimum trading days. If a firm does not publish these clearly, that is a warning sign. Do not rely on a YouTube video or a Telegram group for the rules.
Second, check how the firm handles payouts. Ask whether they have paid Ghanaian traders before, and through which method. A firm that only pays by methods unavailable in Ghana is not useful to you. The SEC Ghana licensed operators list at sec.gov.gh is the place to check whether a firm holds a local licence, but remember that an online forex broker is not one of the 17 categories on that list.
Third, check the timezone. Ghana is on GMT, UTC+0. The London session runs 08:00 to 17:00 GMT, and the London/New York overlap is 12:00 to 17:00 GMT. If you have a day job, that overlap may be your only window. Choose an evaluation whose rules fit the hours you can actually trade.
| Part of the day | Local time · GMT |
|---|---|
| Busiest window | 12:00-17:00 GMT — London and New York open together |
| Thinnest stretch | 21:00-06:00 GMT — Sydney alone, wider spreads |
| European open | 08:00-17:00 GMT |
| US open | 12:00-21:00 GMT |
| Closed | Friday New York close until the Sydney open on Monday |
For the clocks in force today, the hours shown are GMT in London until 28 March and EDT in New York until 1 November. Ghana does not change clocks, so each move shifts these local times by an hour and the page is rebuilt on the day it happens.
The Limits of Prop Firm Trading in Ghana
Prop firms are not regulated by SEC Ghana. The SEC Ghana licensee register lists 17 categories of licensed operator, and an online or leveraged foreign-exchange broker is not one of them. A firm offering that service to Ghanaian residents is therefore working under a licence issued somewhere else. That does not make it illegal for you to participate, but it does mean your recourse is limited if something goes wrong.
Because the firm is offshore, you cannot rely on local consumer protection. If a firm refuses to pay, your options are practical rather than legal. That is why reputation and a clear payout history matter. Look for firms that have been operating for several years and that publish their payout records.
Finally, treat the evaluation fee as money you are willing to lose. It is a cost, not an investment. If you pass, the funded account is a tool, not a salary. The traders who do well are the ones who follow the rules and manage risk, not the ones who chase the biggest challenge.

A register says whether a firm holds a licence on the day you look, and nothing about how it treats clients. Look up the company named in the broker's footer, not the trading name on the adverts.
Why the Order You Do Things In Matters More Than Speed
Many Ghanaian traders pay for an evaluation first and only afterwards work out how the payout would actually reach them. That order is backwards. Before any payment leaves your MTN Mobile Money wallet, confirm the firm's payout method and whether it suits a Ghanaian bank account or mobile wallet.
The practical reason is simple. Evaluation fees are paid by you, but payouts come from the firm, and those two flows rarely use the same rail. A firm may accept card or mobile money on the way in while sending profits by bank transfer only. Check the firm's own funding page for the exact methods it lists.
Treat this as your sequence: confirm the payout rail, confirm the platform works on your connection, then pay. Traders who reverse it often pass an evaluation and then spend weeks resolving how to be paid, while the account sits idle. The SEC Ghana licensed operators list at sec.gov.gh is where you check any firm claiming local authorisation.
Account opening: the documents
- Ghana Card or passport
- Who you are
- Selfie with the ID document
- That the document is in your hands
Brokers usually also ask for proof of address; requirements differ per firm. The requirements that matter are the ones on your broker's own application page.
The Failure Mode Nobody Warns You About: Passing and Then Breaking the Account
Most beginners focus entirely on passing the evaluation. The harder test is the funded stage, where the same rules continue to apply but the amounts and expectations change. Traders who pass on a careful, patient approach sometimes abandon it once a funded account opens.
Read the funded account agreement as a separate document from the evaluation terms. Rules on consistency, maximum daily loss and news trading can differ between the two stages. Assuming the evaluation rules carry over unchanged is a common and expensive mistake, and it usually surfaces only when a payout is refused.
If a rule is unclear, ask the firm in writing before you trade the funded account. Keep the reply. A written answer is far more useful than a forum post when a dispute arises, and it costs nothing to request. The firm's own terms page, not a social media group, is the reference that counts.

An indicative rate is for sizing a position in your head, not for settling one. The gap between it and your broker's conversion is part of what a trade costs you.
How GMT Changes the Way You Trade an Evaluation from Ghana
Ghana runs on GMT, UTC+0, all year, with no daylight saving shift. That sounds trivial until you realise most prop firms set their trading day, daily loss reset and news restrictions on a different timezone. Your calm morning may fall inside another trader's late session.
The consequence is that a daily loss limit may reset at a time that feels arbitrary to you, perhaps mid-afternoon or during your evening. If you trade across that reset without knowing when it happens, you can misjudge how much room you have left for the day. Confirm the reset time in the firm's own rules.
News restrictions deserve the same attention. Announcements that move currency pairs often land outside your normal trading hours, so a strategy that works in your evening may sit directly on top of a restricted window. Mark the reset and the restricted periods on your own calendar before you place a first trade.
| Platform | What it is | Who makes it |
|---|---|---|
| MetaTrader 4 | The older standard; expert advisors and a large script ecosystem | MetaQuotes |
| MetaTrader 5 | The newer build; more order types and timeframes | MetaQuotes |
| cTrader | Depth of market and a different order model | Spotware |
| The broker's own app | Usually simpler, and tied to that one firm | The broker |
A platform is software, not a safeguard: the same terminal is offered by licensed and unlicensed firms alike. Only the regulator's register answers whether a firm is licensed - a download page cannot.
Can I use MTN Mobile Money to pay for a prop firm evaluation?
Some prop firms accept mobile money, but many only accept card or bank transfer. Check the firm's payment page before you sign up. If they accept MTN Mobile Money, you can pay through your MTN MoMo app. If they do not, you may need a card that works for international payments. The firm's own checkout page is the only reliable source for what they accept.
Are prop firms regulated in Ghana?
No. The SEC Ghana licensee register lists 17 categories of licensed operator, and an online or leveraged foreign-exchange broker is not one of them. A prop firm offering services to Ghanaian residents is therefore working under a licence issued somewhere else. You can check the SEC Ghana licensed operators list at sec.gov.gh to see which categories are covered.
What happens if I pass a prop firm evaluation?
If you pass, the firm may offer you a funded account. You then trade the firm's capital under a contract that sets out the profit split, withdrawal rules, and loss limits. The firm decides the terms, so read the funding agreement carefully. Passing does not guarantee income. You can still lose the account if you breach a drawdown rule.
